The Constellation range, introduced in 1952, was Omega’s “luxury” watch range. Its emblem, an observatory, signified that every watch in this series was an observatory-tested chronometer. In 1953, Omega unveiled the Constellation “Grand Luxe,” which became the star attraction at that year’s “Montres et Bijoux” exhibition.
The “Grand Luxe” models featured Reinhor “brick” bracelets with rounded edges, transforming these wrist chronometers into opulent gold timepieces. Each version was strictly monochrome: yellow-gold cases came with matching yellow-gold dials and bracelets; rose-gold models with rose-gold dials and bracelets; and so on. They were offered in all three gold hues as well as in platinum.
Most examples sported a “pie-pan” dial with a guilloche pattern in the outer area. The official name for this design is “douze pans” or “twelve facets.” Every watch was delivered in a luxurious sterling-silver presentation box. One of the most innovative features was the waterproof case, equipped with a snap-on back and an “O” sealing gasket.
The present model is exceptionally rare. After extensive research, we are not aware of any other examples. Made in 1956, it boasts both case and Reinhor “brick” bracelet in 18 K white gold. Its dial departs from the typical “pie-pan” style, presenting a two-tone grey surface set with a total of 15 diamonds. Both watch and bracelet are in outstanding original condition – which is very unusual for these Grand Luxe timepieces.
