Joseph-Antoine-Jean Redier à Paris, Height 200 mm, circa 1870
An ornamental rotating globe timepiece
Case: brass, gilt, octagonal marble base, polychrome enamel globe with monogram cartouche. Dial: applied gilt chapter ring with white enamel cartouches with Arabic numerals, hand with a gilt sun. Movm.: keywind, 8-day spring driven movement with lever escapement, screw compensation balance.
This outstanding "sphère mouvante" was first presented and described in detail in "La Nature Revue des Sciences" in June 1883.
French clockmaker and inventor Joseph-Antoine-Jean Redier (1817-1892) attended the clockmaking school in Paris and invented a compass with a special equidistant circle (1835) during his time there. In 1847 he invented the alarm and the so-called "pendules huitaines ", which revolutionized the watchmaking industry. Redier was made a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1863 and an officer in 1878. Antoine Redier was married twice. He left behind a widow and 14 children.
