"SN" (Sené & Neisser à Genève) / Jean-Abraham Lissignol, 90 x 62 x 20 mm, 149 g, circa 1807
An exquisite Swiss gold enamel snuff box "The Death of Sophonisba"
Case: 18K gold, maker's punch mark "SN" in a vertical lozenge (Sené & Neisser à Genève), enamel miniature with signature "Lissignol", French 18k gold guarantee mark for Geneva 1798-1809.
Rectangular case with slanted corners, decorated with opaque sky-blue and white taille d'épargne flower vases. The sides and base engine-turned with a geometric pattern and translucent cobalt blue enamelled within taille d'épargne borders of black, white and blue enamel. The cover with an octagonal enamel plaque with an exquisite polychrome miniature painting, signed Lissignol: the Death of Sophonisba after a painting by Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727-1785), framed by a border of black, white and blue enamel.
Henry Christian Neisser (1758-1840) became a citizen of Geneva in 1814. Neisser was born as son of Philippe-Theodore Neisser in Hanau and had also trained there. He moved to Geneva in 1783 and worked with Isaac Forget; in 1798 he became a partner of Sené & Détall and the company was renamed to Sené & Neisser. A joint master’s mark was registered in 1807, but the company closed in 1808. In the same year Neisser registered his own master’s mark and on October 21, 1815 he registered the mark Maison Oltramare. The mark was unregistered in July 1830, presumably when Neisser retired.
Jean-Abraham Lissignol was born in Geneva in 1749. He was the pupil and partner of Jean-Marc Roux and later was apprenticed in Paris. He was one of the most important enamel miniature painters and was specialised on snuffboxes and watch cases. He worked for Jaquet-Droz, Leschot, Rochat, John Rich and Jean-Georges Rémond & Company He died in Plainpalais in 1819.
