Coliau à Paris, Height 480 mm, circa 1785
An exquisite, skeletonized Directoire mantel clock with date and specially designed pinwheel escapement
Case: firegilt bronze and white marble. Dial: enamel chapter ring, centre seconds, red-painted radial calendar ring. Movm.: the center of the dial displaying the circular brass full plate movement with skeletonized plates, 1 open barrel, knife edge suspension, steel/brass/gridiron pendulum.
The clock sits on a white marble pedestal with floral applications and two column bases decorated with garlands. The skeletonised dial is framed by a border of gilded pearls; it is flanked by interlacing twisted bands and pearl strings surmounted by a round marble plaque with a bud finial.
According to Tardy, Antoine Coliau was a French Louis XVI clockmaker who lived in the 18th century. He worked at the rue du Mail in Paris until 1778. Thereafter, he was situated at the Neuve des Petits Champs until 1787.
