An impressive large carriage clock with half hour / hour self strike, moon phase and 8 day power reserve indicator
Case: brass, gilt, "Anglais" case, facet glazed on all sides. Dial: silvered, engine-turned. Movm.: brass movement, 1 hammer / 1 gong, 2 barrels, platform with lateral lever escapement, screw compensation balance.
An almost identical clock is shown on page 112f, illus. V/12 - V/13, of "Carriage Clocks - Their history & development" by Charles Allix, Woodbridge, Suffolk 1974.
We know of only about eight clocks of this type - these "giant" travel clocks were made by Auguste Louis Berthoud, grandson of the famous Louis Berthoud and himself a highly gifted maker.
