Lot 250

A. Lange & Söhne, Glashütte B/Dresden, Movement No. 5499, 183 x 172 x 180 mm, circa 1943
A ship's chronometer with 56h power reserve "Deutsches Einheitschronometer"
Case: oak, case with sealing lugs, bakelite gimbals and bowl. Dial: white. Movm.: brass movement, chain/fusee, spring detent escapement according to Thomas Earnshaw, "Griesbach"-chronometer balance with 4 weights and 2 screws.
From 1943 on German chronometer makers were obliged to produce this type of German standard chronometer: in a Bakelite case, with thinner movement plates and only three pillars, however, here at least chain and fusee were used instead of the simple steel band. Lange & Söhne produced around 800 examples after February 1943, with numbers from 5001 to 5870.
