Cartier, Swiss / Audemars Piguet, Brassus & Genève, "Ronde à Pattes Calendrier", Movement No. 56738, Case No. 50757, Cal. Audemars Piguet 10''' (9/10RSQ), 31,5 mm, circa 1967
An important, astronomic and extremely fine wristwatch with day, date and month indicator, moon age and moon phase with the legendary ultra-thin Audemars Piguet calibre 9/10RSQ. This is a unique piece in a mirror-finished platinum case produced for Cartier.
Case: platinum, push back, octagonal sapphire-set crown, 18k white gold deployant clasp. Dial: enamel, radial Roman numerals, three subsidiary dials for indications of the weekday, the date and the month, subsidiary dial for enamelled moon phase with moon age indicator in combination with auxiliary seconds, "Epée"-hands in white gold and blued steel. Movm.: bridge movement, calibre Audemars Piguet 10''', signed 'Audemars Piguet', rhodium-plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, 8 adj., 18 jewels, Glucydur screw balance, blued balance spring.
The history of calibre 9/10RSQ is a fascinating and important chapter as it simultaneously speaks directly to the inherent rarity of Audemars Piguet complications.
Calibre 9/10RS was ultimately made in 2,811 units, however the vast majority were time-only watches as only 68 examples were produced with calendar mechanisms and eventually designated as 9/10RSQ.
The movement blanks for these important calibres were supplied by Louis-Elysee Piguet. The circular movements were then completed and extensively finished by Audemars Piguet watchmakers: the Geneva stripes on the serpentine bridges, the circular or straight graining on the baseplates, the polished chamfers and straight-grained surfaces for all steelwork components, and the highly polished screws were all expertly handled with extreme care and precision. These 68 full calendar calibres were all produced between 1945 and 1950 and sold between 1949 and 1967.
Audemars Piguet used calibre 9/10RSQ in two different reference: 5504 with its 37 mm case dimension and its symmetrical rectangular apertures for the display of the day of the week and month and reference 5513 with a case dimension of 31 mm and a far more traditional calendar display. Despite its small size, the calendar is quite easy to read: large subsidiary dials at 12 oclock for date and at 6 oclock for phases of the moon combined with small seconds; and smaller subsidiary dials at 9 oclock for day of the week and 3 oclock for the month. Nineteen examples of reference 5513 were produced between 1945 and 1950 and they were sold between 1951 and 1967. According to the Archives, 11 were cased in yellow gold, 4 in white gold and 3 in pink gold.
It is the only example made in platinum. Only five of the 19 examples are currently known to the Heritage Department.
