Attributed to Frères Les Raffard à Genève, 65 x 28 mm, 26 g, circa 1800
A rare, very fine gold enamel miniature-form watch, studded with half-pearls "The Mandolin"
Case: 14k gold, enamel, later Viennese 14k gold Austro-Hungarian monarchy assay mark 1866-1872. Dial: enamel. Movm.: miniature full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, verge escapement, three-arm brass balance.
The quality of the engraving and enamelling on the case is outstanding. The instrument is finely executed. This is a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery.
Front and back are decorated with engine-turned geometric pattern and translucent red and cobalt blue enamelling; the sides have Champlevé enamelling and half pearl ornamentation. A white sheet of music framed by green Champlevé enamel foliage is shown on the back. The front is studded with half-pearls and decorated with finely scrolled leaves. The glass-panelled sound hole reveals the escapement, the strings are made of gold. This watch can be attributed on the basis of an almost identical watch signed by Frères Les Raffard sold by Antiquorum, Geneva in 2011.
