Lieutaud à Paris, Height 550 mm, circa 1780
An ornamental half hour striking cartel clock
Case: brass, firegilt. Dial: enamel. Movm.: circular brass full plate movement, 2 barrels, applied locking plate on reverse side, 1 hammer / 1 bell, short pendulum.
The clock is shaped like a tapered wall applique, with a vase on top; the vase has laurel garlands hanging from it that are decorated with pine cones. The dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes sits in a fluted body with lateral, latticed sound holes. The lower part holds a small glazed compartment for the pendulum, which has acanthus leaves on the sides and an acanthus cone at the bottom.
Jean Joseph Lieutaud was based at the "Cour Abbatiale de Saint-Germain-des-Prés" in Paris. He became a master in 1764 and worked until 1789. On July 9, 1767 Lietaud rented a house in the Rue de Bussy from Jérôme de Beyne for 1300 Livres.
