Gregson à Paris, Movement No. 658, Case No. 658, 54 mm, 102 g, circa 1785
A decorative Louis XVI enamel verge pocket watch, studded with paste stones
Case: gilt, paste-set bezels. Dial: enamel. Movm.: full plate movement, chain/fusee, three-arm brass balance.
An exquisitely ornamented French neoclassicism pocket watch. The bezels on the front and the back are decorated with paste stones. The back shows a high oval medallion studded with paste stones and a polychrome enamel painting of a period scene with a shepherdess. A central lavishly ornamented flower tendril with paillon decoration sits below against a background of dark blue enamel. Case maker’s signature "Leton" inside the back lid.
Jean-Pierre Gregson originally came from England. In 1776 he was appointed watchmaker to the king in Paris. He was one of the first watchmakers of his time to use the Lépine calibre. In 1787 Gregson founded a watch manufacture in Braille.
