Roman & Melly à Constance, 42 x 27 mm, 29 g, circa 1800
A decorative and remarkable German gold enamel pear form pendant watch
Case: gold enamel, champlevé enamel motifs: yellow, white and translucent red flowers and gold foliage against an opaque enamelled cobalt blue ground. Dial: enamel. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, chain/fusee, verge escapement.
The quality of the engraving and enamelling on the case is outstanding. The peduncle and the receptacle are finely executed This is a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery.
Roman & Melly were a German watch manufactory with Swiss origins from Geneva. After 1778 the company was based in Constance. Ami Melly was company director from 1778 to 1785; his successor was François Roman. Amed Roux was managing director and the company was renamed to Roman, Melly, Roux & Cie.
