Lot 255
Patek Philippe Genève, Movement No. 1905085, Case No. 4214407, Ref. 5016P-010, Cal. RTO 27 PS-QR, 36,5 mm, circa 2004
A gentleman's very important and extremely fine and complicated platinum Geneva minute repeating wristwatch with tourbillon, perpetual calendar, retrograde date and moon phases, in practically new condition - sold in January 2004 by Patek Philippe, Paris - with original fine wood presentation box, original certificate and C.O.S.C. rating certificate. Only a few pieces of this model were ever produced and so far no more than about eight platinum examples have come to auction, among them six pieces with a silver dial, reference 5016P-011, and just one other example with white dial, reference 5016P-010.
Case: platinum, glazed push back, slide for repeating mechanism, Patek Philippe leather bracelet with platinum deployant clasp. Dial: white, matt silvered, applied Breguet numerals, arched sector for retrograde date, three windows for days of the week, leap year indication and month in English, subsidiary dial for auxiliary seconds combined with moon phase aperture, Breguet hands. Movm.: bridge movement, rhodium-plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, 8 adj., 28 jewels, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, finely mirror-polished steel tourbillon cage, Gyromax balance.
Until the launch of the "Sky and Moon" tourbillon (reference 5002), reference 5016 was regarded as the most complicated wristwatch ever produced by Patek Philippe. Its dial and the form of the case take their inspiration from the tried and tested design of the magnificent "Star" references 2499 and 2497. In fact, the 5016 is a direct successor of the 2499 – easily recognisable from the fluted and gently curved lugs. Reference 5016 unites the classic Patek Philippe style with three of the most highly prized complications in a watch: the perpetual calendar with moon phase display, the minute repeater and the tourbillon. An additional highlight is the retrograde date hand: after the end of the month it flies back to "1".
Reference 5016 was produced from 1993 to 2011 in three different colours of gold and in platinum. The one and only version of this watch to be produced in steel was created specially for Only Watch 2015. The dials are usually silvered or black, the numerals match the colour of the case. One of the most famous wearers of this precious timepiece was Eric Clapton, who sold his platinum watch with black dial at Christie’s in 2014.
A graceful interaction of highly sophisticated functions with carefully crafted individual parts created with skilful diligence and care – Patek Philippe’s reference 5016 par excellence.
