Patek Philippe & Co. Genève, Movement No. 864184, Case No. 299896, Ref. 96, Cal. 12'''SC, 30 mm, circa 1949
A gentleman's extremely rare vintage Geneva wristwatch in an early Calatrava case with indirect centre seconds - with Patek Philippe box
Case: 18k gold, push back. Dial: silvered. Movm.: bridge movement, Geneva quality hallmark, gold screw compensation balance.
This timepiece features the famous calibre 12'''SC with indirect centre seconds. The ébauche was created by Victorin Piguet and Patek Philippe in collaboration and the mechanism for the centre seconds was cleverly added to the existing 12'''120 "subsidiary seconds" movement.
The dial of this watch is exquisite in a very low-key way; it is matte silver with sculpted applied gold hour indexes and has an outer minute track with delicate Arabic numerals. The hour and minutes hands are gold, the seconds hand is blue and corresponds with the case and its tip is gently curved downward. The minute track is divided into seconds and cooperates perfectly with the sweep centre seconds – a detailed accounting of the time is available at a glance.
The 30 mm 18k gold case is relatively small by today’s standards but stylish and marvellously sculpted. Bezel, lugs and sides are made as one piece of shaped gold.
