Gebrüder Hahn Hoffmechanici à Stuttgardt, Movement No. 225, 60 mm, 126 g, circa 1795
A gentleman's important German pocket watch with regulator dial, 24h indicator and calendar
Case: silver, polished, tiered, glazed on both sides. Dial: enamel dial with red Arabic hours on the left and black Arabic hours on the right; in the centre four subsidiary chapter rings: auxiliary seconds, minutes, date and German weekdays, blued and gilt hands.Movm.: full plate movement, firegilt, signed, seconds stop device, concave movement pillars, open barrel, open work balance bridge with regulator scale decorated with floral engravings and birds, large seven-arm brass balance, horizontal cylinder escapement with steel cylinder and silver cylinder wheel, facetted garnet endstone on balance.
This watch is illustrated and described in "Klassik Uhren", issue 4/2012, published by Ebner Verlag in Ulm 2012, pages 20-51, in "Neue Funde zu Philipp Matthäus Hahn" by Christoph Oehm-Kuehnle.
The book "Philipp Matthäus Hahn 1739-1790" was published in two volumes by the Württembergisches Landesmuseum Stuttgart and Christian Vaeterlein in 1989; Vol. I is entitled "catalogue" ("Katalog"), Vol. II is entitled "essays" ("Aufsätze"). Vol. I shows a watch with a similar dial with red and black hours (1-12 / 1-12) on page 491. On page 475 a watch with a very similar case, held by the Württembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart, is illustrated and described.
Research associate Dr. Guenter Oestmann is the author of several essays in both volumes; his works are devoted to pocket watches by Philipp Matthaeus Hahn, his staff and his successors.
The watch was presented to Dr. Oestmann in Bremen in March 2015; Dr. Oestmann confirmed the authenticity of both original case and movement. According to his expertise this watch is the only one we know that is glazed on both sides.

The brothers Hahn, Christian Gottfried (* 1769) and Christoph Matthäus (1767-1833), worked in the workshop of their father Philipp Matthäus Hahn of Onstmettingen, Kornwestheim, and Echterdingen. Christian Gottfried and Christoph Matthäus went on to become "Hofmechanikus" (court mechanicians) in Stuttgart. Christian Gottfried was later recorded in Berlin and in America.
