A fine pair-cased verge pocket watch with early centre seconds
Case: outer case - 18K gold, polished, à goutte, engraved monogram, case maker's punch mark "HT" (Henry Cleaver Taylor), large lateral hinge. Inner case - 18k gold, polished, signed and numbered movement protection cap, case maker's punch mark "HT" (Henry Cleaver Taylor), seconds stop lever. Dial: enamel, radial Roman hours, centre seconds, blued steel "Poker & Beetle" hands. Movm.: full plate movement, applied florally engraved ornaments, firegilt, signed, chain/fusee, square baluster pillars, three-arm brass balance, fine engraved, pierced balance cock with mascaron, chatoned diamond endstone on balance.
Between 1747 and 1780 John Pyke is listed as working at Grays Inn, London; Pyke was clock and watchmaker to the Prince of Wales, the future King George III.
