Jeremie Gregory at the Royal Exchange, London, 51 mm, 97 g, circa 1670
A fine, single-handed pair-cased verge pocket watch with date
Case: outer case - brass, gilt, leather-covered, gold stud decoration, large lateral hinge. Inner case - brass, gilt, polished, seven-piece hinge. Dial: brass, inlaid radial Roman hours, pierced and engraved centre ornamented with blossom scrolls, outer date ring with Arabic numerals, single iron hand. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, firegilt, signed, gut/fusee, Egyptian movement pillars, ratchet wheel set up with blued steel spring, two-arm iron balance without balance spring, florally engraved and pierced balance cock.
Jeremie Gregory (d. 1686)
Worked in London, Cornhill/Royal Exchange. He was a member of the Clockmakers' Company in 1652, and master in 1665. A maker of repute, a traveling clock by him is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, a silver alarm watch in the Guildhall Museum, and another in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
