Sold
Jess Hans Martens was born 1826 in Schleswig. Until 1842 he trained to become a blacksmith and worked as a blacksmith until 1845; after that he apprenticed in watchmaking. During the German-Danish war Martens met Moritz Grossmann; Martens went travelling after his time of service and eventually came to La Chaux de Fonds. In 1858 Martens was the so called first technical teacher (main teacher) at the watchmaking school in Furtwangen/Baden. He published his book "Hemmungen der höheren Uhrmacherkunst". Martens also received numerous medals and awards at international exhibitions.
The watchmaking school was closed in 1864 and Martens moved to Freiburg, where he opened a shop as well as a company for the production and sale of pocket watches in 1867. He published his second book on chronometer escapements in 1875. He handed his business over to Georg Wessel in 1883. Jess Hans Martens died in 1892 in Freiburg.
