In 1969 Breitling presented their Chrono-Matic, one of the first automatic chronographs which also came with a distinctive, edgy design. The movement was developed by the Buren group, a collaboration of Hamilton, Breitling and Heuer. A chronograph module by Dubois-Depraz was integrated with base calibre 11. This resulted in the position of the crown on the left side of the case, with the two chronograph pushers remaining in their traditional position on the right. Another distinctive feature is the offset position of the chronograph registers and the date window in a position slightly to the side of 6 o’clock, which gives it an avant-garde look. Hours and minutes are combined on the revolving bezel. The reverse panda dial with light-coloured subdials on black ground ensures excellent readability. The bar indexes bear a luminous coat in a vibrant mint green colour, presenting an exciting contrast to the bright orange-coloured pointers. The outer tachymeter scale emphasises the sportive character of the watch.
The Breitling 2110-15 dating from 1969 is not only a remarkable vintage timepiece but also represents a milestone in the history of chronographs. Due to its rarity, the historical importance of the early automatic calibre and the distinctive, bold design, the watch is highly coveted by today’s collectors.
