The Rolex King Midas reference 4316 is one of the rarest and most remarkable and timepieces Rolex ever created. It was produced from the late 1960s into the 1970s and later included in the exclusive Cellini range. The model is particularly famous for its avant-garde design and the luxury materials it used.
The King Midas was composed by legendary watch designer Gérald Genta and stands out from the classic Rolex models. The bold design takes its inspiration from antique Greek architecture and stands out from the classic Rolex models. The first King Midas references 9630, 3580 and 4315 feature a distinctive one-of-a-kind asymmetric case design, which is reminiscent of the Parthenon temple.
The King Midas was one of the most precious Rolex watches of the time and produced in a very limited edition. This model did not target the general market, but was intended for wealthy collectors and connoisseurs who appreciated extravagant design elements.
Elvis Presley was one of the most famous wearers of the Rolex King Midas; he was gifted a reference 9630 after his successful performance at the Houston Astrodome in 1970. John Wayne also owned a King Midas.
The case of this timepiece is made of solid 18 K white gold with a satin finish and lends the watch a prestigious yet subtle radiance. The weight of circa 130 g makes the King Midas one of the heaviest dress watches of its time.
Ref. 4316 is powered by a mechanic hand-wound movement known for its accuracy and reliability. Depending on the year of production, Rolex used calibres 650 or 651 for this series.
Reference 4316 is very much a rarity on today’s vintage market. Because of its distinctive design, the limited production and the connection to Gérald Genta it has a very special standing among collectors.
