The first LANGE 1 wristwatches were produced from 1994 onwards and are easily recognisable by their solid case back secured with six screws. With the modern examples, the beautiful calibre L901.0 movement, with its nickel silver plates and bridges and hand-engraved balance cock, is revealed through a transparent sapphire crystal screw-back. This is not the case here. It is an early speciality from A. Lange & Söhne that harks back to the idea of past decades when luxury watch collectors operated with a higher degree of trust.
This LANGE 1 reference 101.005 features a platinum case and a solid silver dial with white gold numerals and hands, representing a monochrome version of the LANGE 1 that collectors commonly refer to as the "Stealth" model. The watch is in well-worn but excellent condition, equipped with an early movement, calibre L901.0, and early "Made in Germany" lettering on the original dial.

When it launched in 1994, the LANGE 1 certainly broke the mould with the design of its dial. All indications are in peripheral positions, which gives the watch its distinctive appearance and at the same time ensures perfect readability, because none of the displays overlap.
The design of the LANGE 1 follows a coherent principle: the centres of the subsidiary seconds dial, the main dial and the outsize-date display are at the corners of an isosceles triangle. The proportions of the outsize-date display are harmonious as well: they respect the rule of the golden ratio.
