In 1858, Maurice Ditisheim (1831–1899) founded his own company in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In his atelier, he produced fine pocket watches that he sold under his own name. His watches were distinguished above all by their precision and quality. The workshop quickly grew into the Maurice Ditisheim Manufacture. Then the Vulcain brand was launched on the market in 1894 and achieved a high profile in 1947 with their "Cricket" wrist alarm watch. This novelty made Vulcain watches popular with the American presidents (starting with Harry S. Truman), which led to its reputation as "The Watch for Presidents".
