IWC was a little later than other brands in developing diver’s watches and introduced the Aquatimer reference 812AD, resp. 1812 in 1967.
It features two crowns, where the lower one is used for manually setting the time and the upper crown operates the inside stop watch bezel to set the diving time. This bezel is positioned directly on the edge of the dial under the crystal to make accidental readjustment during the dive impossible. The case is waterproof to a depth of 300 m; the heavy case back possesses an inner super compressor area, which increases watertightness in greater depth and compresses it further under higher pressure. Inside the watch beats the proprietary IWC calibre 8541 with the legendary Pellaton winding system that was also used for the Ingenieur range.
This timepiece features a grey/green dial, which changes to a lighter, almost turquoise hue towards the centre; this makes the watch stand out among all other vintage diver’s watches on the market. The luminous material on the hands and indexes has acquired a fresh lemon colour which looks just fabulous against the different shades of blue on the dial. Both crowns bear the fish logo used by IWC for waterproof watches. The case is robust with a beautiful caseback and a submarine emblem.
