The National Watch Co. was founded in 1864 in Elgin, northwest of Chicago and became the most important maker of quality watches alongside the Hamilton Watch Co. In 1874 the company name changed to Elgin National Watch Co.; the firm was in business until 1964, having by then produced about 50 million watches.
