This gold hunter is an early pocket watch made by J. Assmann. This 1st quality, key-wound watch was still manufactured with a 2/3 plate and separate lever cock, probably around 1860.
Judging from the 18 K gold case and the English dedication engraving, the watch was probably made for the American market, which was at the time the key market of the Assmann company. The engraving "J. Assmann Dresden" on the dial and the plate supports this notion. At the time US law required that the provenance of the watch was stated. As Glashütte was still unknown at the time, both A. Lange & Cie. and J. Assmann signed their export pieces "Dresden".
