In 1826 Newton Ebenezer Crittenden (1801–1872) opened the first jeweller’s shop in Cleveland, Ohio. The first shop was a simple single-storey brick building in the town centre, which soon developed into an important trading hub in the fast-growing town, especially after the completion of the Erie and Ohio Canal in 1832.
