Ellis Samuel Yates was born on 23 February 1805 in Liverpool, Lancashire, the first-born of the watchmaker and silversmith Lewis Judah Samuel (1783-1854) and Catherine Yates (1785-1858). Both grandfathers, Ralph Samuel (1738-1809) and Samuel Yates (1757-1825), originally came from Strelitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. They were one of the first Jewish families to live in Liverpool.
Ellis Samuel married his cousin Kate Samuel and changed his name to Yates, the family name on his mother's side. He founded a clock and watch shop at 6 Lord Street under the name "E. S. Yates & Co.". He was not, as had been assumed, a descendant of the watch and clockmaker Thomas Yates (1812-1890), but a contemporary. Ellis Samuel Yates died in 1849.
Bowman & Ebbitt were makers of watch cases and dials based at John Street No. 17 in New York.
