The Piaggio company was established by Rinaldo Piaggio in 1884. The foundation for the business had been laid by his father Cavalier Enrico Piaggio, who purchased a plot of land in Sestri Ponente, Genua, in 1882, which was originally intended as a timberyard. At first the family focussed on shipbuilding but later shifted to railway waggons.
With the rise of aviation Rinaldo Piaggio turned towards aircraft construction. He found capable engineers and began building aircrafts in 1916, building a new factory at Pontedera.
Due to the war, Piaggio was very successful in the late 1930s, bec he was a supplier to the Italian army. However, the factory at Pontedera was destroyed completely and after 1945 the allied powers refused Piaggio the permission to produce military equipment.
