The remontoir and setting mechanism used in this watch was designed in 1845 by Jean Adrien Philippe and laid the groundwork for the modern winding mechanisms used in today’s timepieces. This pocket watch features an exquisite quarter repeater, which still has a lovely tone. It is one of the earliest complications produced by the young company Patek & Cie., which would later be known as Patek Philippe. The movement is fitted in a magnificent ornamental silver and gold case with sophisticated engraving. The front shows a lion fighting a serpent, which may be modelled after the bronze "Lion au Serpent" created by Antoine-Louis Barye in 1832, which today resides at the Louvre. The back is decorated with an anchor entwined by vine leaves and ears of corn. There is also an elaborate monogram "SNB".
