The Royal Oak Offshore Michael Schumacher, reference 26568OM.OO.A004CA.01 is a tribute to the legendary Formula 1 driver. The 44 mm case is made of 18 K pink gold. The cermet bezel has eight screws that are reminiscent of wheel nuts. On the inner bezel are seven stars, two blue and five red, representing the seven world championships won by Michael Schumacher during his career - two for Benetton in 1994 and 1995 and five for Ferrari from 2000 to 2004.
The minute track has a subtle black and white pattern reminiscent of a checkered flag. The black chronograph subdials feature raised pink gold frames based on the dashboard instruments of a high-performance car. In keeping with the silhouette of a Formula One racing car, the hour and minute hands are in faceted pink gold with a white luminescent coating, while the chronograph hands are lacquered red. For the first time on a Royal Oak Offshore, the date display is also red.
This watch marks the second use - after the Jarno Trulli released in 2010 - of Cermet by Audemars Piguet. Cermet is a very advanced composite typically used in creating heat shields for space shuttles and takes its name from the contraction of the words "ceramic" and "metal". Cermet is anti-corrosive and has a hardness rating of 1,450 Vickers among its peers.
The specially designed grey rubber strap is attached by satin-finished titanium studs that mimic the cooling fins of a racing car, while the pink gold crown is milled in the shape of a gearwheel and adorned with a red anodised aluminium plate bearing the Audemars Piguet logo. Titanium caps protect the pushers in polished black ceramic, which are decorated with caps in pink gold.
The watch is powered by the robust yet delicate 3126/3840 calibre, revealed by the sapphire crystal case back. The rotor bears Michael Schumacher’s signature.
