Silver, octagonal dial plate, finely engraved foliage scrolls, folding gnomon with hinge and bird index, compass set into the dial plate, scale set to 50° latitude, the back is finely engraved and lists the latitudes of a number of French and other European cities.

Jean Chapotot was a prolific instrument maker in Paris. He was active around 1690 to 1721. He made many instruments for the Academy of Sciences. His sundials are mostly modelled on those of Michael Butterfield.
