The name of the 1815 UP/DOWN refers to the birth year of Ferdinand A. Lange and to the brand’s iconic UP/DOWN power-reserve indicator, a device first used in historic pocket watches and marine chronometers. It dates back to a Lange patent granted in 1879. The dial features the typical style elements of the 1815 family, which bring to mind the design of vintage pocket watches: blued steel hands to stand out from the dial, Arabic numerals, sunk centre and railway-track minute scale.
This 1815 UP/DOWN, reference 221.021 is from the 1st generation and has a smaller diameter of 35.9 mm and a lower height of 7.9 mm than those of the 2nd generation, which were introduced in 2008.
