The elegant case is beautifully proportioned, slender with a high front door fitted with a transverse oval pendulum window and a small base. The upper section with glass panels on three sides is decorated with four Tuscan columns on the corners and two ornamental grilles of carved leaf tendrils. The body is crowned by a caddy top with round finials. The demure brass dial has a matted centre and features a silvered chapter ring with Roman hours, a silvered seconds ring at XII and a date window at VI. The spandrels are decorated with four chased winged cherub heads.


Christopher Gould of London, was born around 1660 and was free from the Clockmakers' Company in 1682. Gould had a reputation as an excellent maker of long case and bracket clocks. His clocks are of supreme quality and among the most attractive English clocks of the late 17th and early 18th century. Gould died in 1718.
