This cockpit chronograph comes from the BMW motorcycle with sidecar (to 1200 cc class) used in the Solitude motorcycle race on the 18th September 1949, driven by Johann Roth and his passenger Otto Ruf, both from Niedernhausen near Wiesbaden.
At the Hockenheimring in May 1949 the pair won the May Cup race in front of 120,000 spectators in the class for sidecars up to 1200 cm³. In the same year they became German runner-up. In their hometown Niedernhausen a commemorative plaque reminds people of the two legendary racing drivers.
The Solitude Grand Prix track (11,3 km) near Stuttgart was used 1935-1965 as a circuit and in different challenging variations for F1 races. The races usually had an audience of circa 288.000 viewers, however, they were discontinued after 1966.
