The silver Champlevé dial has retrograde Roman hours for night and day. In the upper half of the centre is a semi-circular opening showing the phases of the sun with an engraved gold sun on a silver disc or the moon phases with an engraved silver moon and stars on a black enamelled disc, which revolves once every 24 hours. When the sun disappears on the right side of the display, the moon appears on the left. The lower half of the centre shows Apollo in high relief with his cithara in the midst of finely engraved sunrays and clouds.

Amsterdam watch and clockmaker Nicolaas Weylandt was born in 1700. From 1742 to 1756, his workshop was located on the Nieuwedijk near the Haarlemmersluis in Amsterdam. He died in 1756.
