This beautiful travelling clock was intended for the French as well as for the English market, as the day of the week display features double inscriptions in both French and English. Next to it are two other subsidiary dials for the alarm and the date on the right. The precision movement ensures impeccable running and a precise chiming mechanism, which strikes the quarters and the full hours on a bell with a rich sound. Pressing the button on the top of the case repeats the last hour and the quarter hour that has passed since.

Charles Oudin (1768-1840) was a pupil of Abraham-Louis Breguet and one of his best masters. Oudin started his own business in Paris and was appointed watchmaker to the Russian tsar; he became famous for designing a keyless wind. His son Charles Raymond Oudin (1806-1867) continued the business after his father's death.
