This wonderful instrument was probably intended for the Italian market, as there is a brass signature plate screwed into the case cover which bears the designation "Cronometro Di Marina".
It was produced by Paul Ditisheim and his company Solvil in La Chaux-de-Fonds and sold to Maurice Ditisheim. In 1858, Maurice Ditisheim founded his own company in La Chaux-de-Fonds. In his atelier, he produced fine pocket watches that he sold under his own name. His watches were distinguished above all by their precision and quality. The workshop quickly grew into the Maurice Ditisheim Manufacture. In 1894, watches of the Vulcain brand were offered for the first time by Gaspard Ditisheim. In 1900, the Maurice Ditisheim company had Vulcain protected as a brand name for its watches.
