Watches of this type were used to be able to keep to predetermined step frequencies when marching. The rate of beat on the mainspring is regulated by a normal fine adjustment mechanism in a somewhat coarser version. A built-in watch key is used to wind the watch, and there is a slide on the outside of the case to stop the balance. Although these special watches were certainly a niche product among watch manufacturers, well-known companies were also involved with them, such as Le Phare or even the famous Abraham Louis Breguet.
