This is a typical example of a French "oignon" - a large watch fitted with a simple construction and easily readable dial, which is lovingly embellished. A volute cartouche in the centre is flanked by a pair of birds. The case is decorated with floral scrolls and strapwork.

Noel Decovigny worked as a watchmaker in Paris from about 1700 to 1740 and was appointed watchmaker to the King (Maître horloger du Roi). Noel Decovigny probably died in 1743.
