William Payne & Co. is first recorded in 1816 and is known to have made musical as well as ordinary watches. In 1831 he was awarded British Patent No 6078 for a new form of pedometer with which he had considerable success. Established at 163 New Bond Street for most of the 19th century, their business was entirely horological until 1906 when they diversified into diamond dealing and retail jewelry. The expensive products of Thomas Cole were retailed by them, but the company disappears from trade directories in 1915 by which time their address was already the same as that of Asprey's.
