The regulator dial on the front features four subsidiary dials for displaying the time, the day of the week, the month and the date. The central second hand can be stopped with a lever on the side of the case. The back shows five subsidiary dials which display hours, minutes, moon age, tide and regulation; an arched aperture in the centre reveals a digital retrograde second.
John Bittleston worked at 207 High Holborn between 1765-1794 and was made a freeman of the Clockmaker's Company in 1781. He was known for his complicated extra large pocket watches and carriage clocks with additional displays and paste-set cases for the Chinese market.
In our 92nd auction on November 15, 2015 we presented a double-cased carriage clock studded with gemstones that was made by John Bittleston; it sold for the sum of 30,000 euros.
