A very fine hunting case minute repeating pocket watch of historical interest with "Grande Sonnerie" and carillon, according the patent by César Racine - with original mahogany box with mother-of-pearl inlay
Case: 18k gold, engraved royal crest and crown, case maker's punch mark "G/BH" (G. Borel-Huguenin). Dial: enamel. Movm.: 1/2 plate movement, 3 hammers / 3 gongs, "Patent Swiss 18543" (César Racine: Perfectionnement au mécanisme des pièces d'horlogerie à grande sonnerie/Improvement of the mechanism for timepieces with "Grande Sonnerie"), tandem winding with mirror polished click on the top, glazed movement, gold screw compensation balance.
The condition of the case and the dial is excellent and the quality of the movement is outstanding. The two barrels are wound through a racking bar. For the minute repeater and the quarter hour strike 'Grande Sonnerie' the three hammers strike on three different gongs
The cover of this watch is engraved in with the Cyrillic cypher of Ferdinand I (1861-1948), King of Bulgaria; it is crowned by the royal Bulgarian crown and framed by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The case back is engraved with the coat of arms of the house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
Ferdinand I was born on February 26, 1861 as Ferdinand Maximilian Karl Leopold Maria of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and was the second monarch of the Third Bulgarian State, first as ruling prince (knyaz) from 1887 to 1908, and later as king (tsar) from 1908 until his abdication in 1918.
Under his rule Bulgaria entered the First World War on the side of the Central Powers in 1915. After his abdication, Ferdinand returned to live in Coburg in Germany. He died in Bürglaß-Schlösschen on September 10, 1948 in Coburg, the cradle of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha dynasty. Ferdinand was the last surviving grandchild of Louis-Philippe of France; his final wish was to be buried in Bulgaria.

Watchmaker Friedrich Baumann in Vienna carried the royal appointments of the Austro-Hungarian Court, the royal Greek and the royal Bulgarian courts and was a certified appraiser. Between 1882 and 1906 he was awarded numerous gold medals and first prizes at the exhibitions in Trieste, Vienna, Paris, Plovdiv in Bulgaria, Athens, Saint Petersburg and London.
