An extremely rare, oval enamel box, presumably Blois School
Case: Silver and polychrome enamel, gilt body.
Multi-coloured summer flowers decorate the whole outside of the top cover. The inside reveals a scene showing a country inn. Six small, applied oval cartouches decorate the edge and are filled with chased putto and motto ornamentation.
At the time Blois was a hub of the enamel arts as well as of watch- and clockmaking. The city gained its reputation during the reign of King Francis I (1515-1547). The painted enamel cases created by the Blois School were unique in their quality and beauty; they were held in great esteem and considered magnificent works of art.
