Frederik Ludwig Gillis, Liverpool, Height 1660 mm, circa 1850
An exquisite English precision regulator
Case: mahogany, back with mirror, glazed on all sides. Dial: silvered. Movm.: finely engraved pierced brass plate movement, Graham escapement with sapphire pallets, mercury steel pendulum, pendulum spring suspension.
When a clockmaker aims for the perfect combination of style, beauty and engineering, the final result of his work might look like this fine regulator made by Frederick Ludwig Gillis: A low-key, yet marvelous mahogany case, pierced and ornamented movement plates, gilded movement frame and weight with exquisite engraving and last but not least a sturdy Graham escapement; the inside of the back plate still has the original mirror, which provides a magnificent background for the gilt double pulley with two large wheels in their ornamented cage. This is a remarkable example of English clockmaking dating from a time when the rise of the railway and the large steam boats began in Liverpool, the original Philharmonic Hall was being built and the observatory took up its work.
