Kohlschitter, Milan, Height 145 mm, circa 1850
An important Italian carriage clock with alarm, date and rare variant of the one-tooth lever escapement by Thomas Robjohn
Case: brass, gilt, moulded, facet glazed on all sides, waved handle with fluted middle part. Dial: enamel. Movm.: rectangular brass full plate movement, keywind, 1 hammer / 1 bell, large barrel for going train, additional barrel for alarm mechanism, platform with one-tooth lever escapement, three-arm brass balance.
Josef Kohlschitter was born in 1813 in Zinnwald (Zumwalde) near Teplice (Bohemia). He was watchmaker of the Royal Italian Navy and mechanic of the Brera Observatory, Milan, and was honoured for his merits by multiple medals. He founded the watchmaker school in Milan and worked as its director. Josef Kohlschitter died in Milan on January 17, 1882.
