A very rare, small one-handed pair-cased verge pocket watch with polychrome enamel dial
Case: outer case brass, glazed back. Inner case brass, gilt, lateral florally engraved and pierced. Dial: enamel, blued steel hand. Movm.: full plate movement, gilt, signed, gut/fusee, Egyptian pillars, two-arm steel balance without balance spring, fine florally engraved, pierced balance cock.
This particularly small verge pocket watch by renowned French maker Estienne Hubert is a delightful piece of art, with its enamel dial unusually decorated with polychrome floral motifs, the intricately ornamented case and the movement in perfect condition – a fine collector’s piece for any lover of vintage watches.
Estienne (Etienne) Hubert (1634 - about 1720) was a renowned clockmaker in Rouen from 1655 until 1720; he became a Master in 1656. The British Museum, the Guildhall Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum all own clocks created by Hubert.
