Rolex "Cellini King Midas", Case No. 3391164, Ref. 3580, Cal. 650, 27 x 28 mm, 188 g, circa 1972
A heavy and rare vintage Geneva "cult" wristwatch "King Midas by Rolex of Geneva". This model was only produced in a small series - this is no. 881
Case: 18k gold, screw back ref. 155, original 18k gold integral bracelet with a rare signed double folding clasp, bracelet length 150 mm, total length 175 mm. Dial: gilt.
This is one of the most highly priced models in the Rolex range and cost nearly twice as much as a regular gold Day-Date. The "King Midas" was one of only three small limited editions produced by Rolex and particularly famous for being worn by Elvis Presley. The King Midas was launched in 1964 as the heaviest gold watch on the market and took its name from Greek mythology’s King Midas, who was able to turn everything he touched into gold.
This timepiece dating from 1972 features an asymmetric pentagonal gold case with integrated bracelet and bears the number 881, which is inscribed on the inside of the bracelet. The designation "King Midas" is engraved on the left case band and on the inside of the clasp. Both bracelet and case are in very good condition with minimal scratching only. The dial is also immaculate and complements the unusual case shape perfectly.
